He Called Her Name
Jesus said to her, "Woman, why are you weeping? Whom are you seeking?" She, supposing Him to be the gardener, said to Him, "Sir, if You have carried Him away, tell me where you have laid Him, and I will take him away." Jesus said to her, "Mary!" She turned and said to Him, "Raboni!"
John 20:16,17
I can imagine Mary there in the garden. Weeping amongst the flowers because of her missing Lord. She probably hastily wiped away her tears when the "gardener" walked up, thinking that she might indeed find out where He had been moved to. Jesus spoke to her, looked at her and yet Mary still didn't realize she was speaking to her Teacher. Then he said her name, and she knew instantly. I imagine that He said it as she had heard him say it many times before. Gently, tenderly, powerfully. I would think that in times before the cross, hearing Him call her name was her favorite sound on earth. I picture Mary listening and talking with Jesus every chance she could, soaking in every word He spoke. She would drop everything she was doing instantly, just to be close to Him when He taught. Yes, Mary knew the sound of His voice calling her name. She had spent so much time with her Teacher listening to Him speak that even when she had seen Him die three days before, she knew Him when He called her name. I would imagine that Jesus' physical appearance was altered, at least to the point where she didn't recognize Him. Yet, she knew His voice call her name so well, all doubt disappeared.
Do you know His voice? Have you heard Him call your name? When He comes again and calls your name will you know Him by His voice?

He speaks and the sound of His voice
Is so sweet the birds hush their singing.
And the melody that He gave to me,
Within my heart is ringing.
